Market comments — USDA reporter

Current hog receipts 8. Compared to last week, boning type slaughter cows were steady to 1.00 lower, while breaking type were 1.00 to 2.00 higher and bulls 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Feeder cattle were lightly tested, steers were mostly steady to 2.00 higher; four-weight heifers were 2.00 to 5.00 lower, while five-weights were 1.00 to 3.00 higher and six-weights were not tested; four- and five-weight feeder bulls were 2.00 to 3.00 lower some as much as 9.00 lower, while six-weights were 15.00 to 16.00 higher. Demand was light ot moderate; market activity and buyer interest were slow to moderate. Offerings of cattle were very light to light due to continued cold, wet, inclement winter weather. Cattle quality was plain to average. Baby calves ranged 10.00 to 40.00 per head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
