Market comments — USDA reporter

Report incudes Carolina Stockyards in Siler City, NC for Friday, November 20, 2020 and Monday, November 23, 2020 and Harward Brothers Livestock Market in Turnersburg, NC for Monday, November 23, 2020. All other markets were closed in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday. All sales and market coverage are expected to resume on Monday, November 30, 2020. Current hog receipts 0. Compared to last week, slaughter cows were steady to 3.00 lower, while bulls were 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Feeder steers were steady to 3.00 higher; heifers mostly 10.00 to 13.00 higher; while feeder bulls were unevenly steady. Demand was fairly light to moderate; market activity and buyer interest were fairly slow to moderate. Offerings of cattle were mostly moderate. Cattle quality was plain to average. Baby calves ranged 5.00 to 25.00 per head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
