Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers sold unevenly steady, with Dairy Steers selling 3.00-5.00 higher. Heifers sold mostly steady, with Dairy Heifers selling weak on a light test. Bulls sold 2.00-3.00 lower compared to a light test last week. All classes of Cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher and with good demand. Buyer attendance for the slaughter cattle sale was moderate, with moderate to good demand on a moderate supply of cattle. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold steady to 4.00 higher, with Feeder Dairy Heifer calves selling firm on a light test. Buyer attendance, demand and sale supply was moderate for the calf sale. Todays sale supply included; 374 steers, 280 heifers, 78 bulls, 390 cows, 618 calves, and 230 misc. cattle.
