Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers sold 5.00-7.00 lower, with Dairy Steers selling weak on a light test. Heifers sold steady to 5.00 lower, with Dairy Heifers selling weak on a light test. Bulls sold unevenly steady compared to a light test last week. Breaker cows sold steady to 2.00 higher, with boner and lean cows selling mostly steady. Buyer attendance for the slaughter cattle sale was light to moderate, with moderate demand overall on a moderate supply of cattle. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold 5.00-10.00 higher, with Feeder Dairy Heifer calves selling firm on a light test. Demand for the calf sale was good overall on a moderate sale supply and with moderate buyer attendance. Todays sale supply included; 423 steers, 284 heifers, 390 cows, 80 bulls, 567 calves, and 210 misc cattle.
