Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Yearling steers and heifers were both too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed on like quality offerings. Steer calves sold generally steady on all offerings under 550 lbs steers over 550 lbs sold steady to weak in a narrow comparison. Heifer calves under 550 lbs sold generally steady, heifer calves over 550 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 lower in a narrow comparison. Yearlings were offered in small packages or as singles while calves were offered in mostly moderate size packages with a few load lots noticed. Very few yearlings were seen this week. Canadian buyers were slightly less active this week as many buyers state finding trucks to go north is difficult. This slightly limited demand from these buyers this week. CME positions saw large swings this weeks as lower grain prices sparked interest in feeder cattle and helped push contracts sharply higher late week. The October contract closed Friday at 343.85, 9.225 higher than last Fridays close. The November contact close Friday at 341.95 10.80 higher than last Fridays close. The January contract closed at 336.35, 11.80 higher than last Fridays close. Market activity was mostly active with good buyer participation noticed. Weigh up cows sold on mostly light to moderate demand for moderate offerings. Demand for feeding cows was stronger as Canadian buyers and American packer buyers both showed stronger demand for feeding cows. Private feeders were also more active especially on thinner cows or slightly blemished cows which buyers will feed or they could test for late bred offerings. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 lower on breaking cows; boning and lean cows sold 4.00-7.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold generally steady on a slightly higher yielding offering. Young age offerings sold on good to very good demand. Several very attractive sets of wet bag two and three year old cows were seen this week. Young age offerings sold mostly 10.00-15.00 higher again this week as rebreed buyers continue to re-enter the market.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
