Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Yearling steer were too lightly tested last week to develop any market trend. Demand was mostly good as quality was high. Unweaned steer calves sold unevenly steady from 4.00 lower to 5.00 higher. Yearling heifers sold mostly 1.00-3.00 lower. Yearling heifer quality was plain to average. Unweaned heifers under 450 lbs sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher; 450-499 lbs unweaned heifers sold 2.00-4.00 higher; 500-549 lbs unweaned heifers sold steady to 2.00 lower; heifers over 550 lbs sold generally steady. Quality this week was mostly average to very attractive. Many long strings and load lots of very attractive calves were seen this week. Demand was mostly moderate to good for heavy offerings. CME positions weakened throughout the week as did calf prices. As of Thursdays close the November contract settled at 136.775, 3.30 lower than last Thursdays close. Market activity this week was mostly active. Weigh up cows sold on light to moderate demand for heavy offerings. Packers continue to put cows away on feed for the upcoming holidays. Heavy offerings were seen early and the week and and packers were aggressive in buying offerings, however by mid week packers showed slightly less demand as they absorbed large quantities of cows. Feeding cow buyers picked around the edges this week as they showed no interest in pushing offerings higher. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 lower. Feeding cows sold steady weak. Cow quality this week was mixed from plain to attractive. Slaughter bulls and feeding bulls sold steady to firm. Weigh up conditions were mostly average to below average. Demand for rebreed type cattle was moderate to good this week. This class of cows sold mostly 5.00-15.00 higher. Really good demand was seen for one iron home raised offerings.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
