Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 499 lbs 10.00 higher with instances up to 18.00 higher on 400 to 449 lbs, 500 to 549 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 400 to 549 lbs mostly steady except 450 to 499 lbs 13.00 to 15.00 higher. A much larger offering of calves this week as the calf run gets underway. Many loads and packages of attractive calves to choose from, all coming off the cow. Good to very good demand for calves. The majority of the calves had full preconditioning or at least a full round of fall shots, calves without were discounted resulting in some wide price spreads. Most of the calves carried light to moderate flesh. An active market at the start of the day with activity slowing a bit as the day wore on. Quite a few farmer feeders in the seats today. The dry summer produced quite a bit of drought damaged corn which ended up in silage piles that need to be fed. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, October 22, featuring Red Angus calves.
