Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Sale not reported in recent weeks so an accurate price trend can not be established. Good demand for today's large offering with best demand seen for cattle suitable for grass or backgrounding, especially those in load lots. Most of the offering was home raised, vaccinated, and long time weaned selling in many packages and a handful of loads. Flesh varied, from light to moderate plus, with some tag on the cattle at times as the yards are really a disaster right now. A range of quality, from plain to attractive, with most variety in packages. An active market with the most of the normal crowd of buyers and a few farmers in the seats. Warmer than normal weather for the past few weeks has the area looking like spring with the frost coming out and water and mud everywhere. Fog and clouds with no sun for the last week have contributed to soft roads and muddy yards. Some cooler weather is expected for the next week but still above normal temperatures for February in SD. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, February 22.
