Compared to last week: best test on steers 550 to 600 lbs 8.00 to 12.00 lower, 601 to 700 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower. Best test on heifers 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for today's large offering with replacement quality heifers from reputation outfits seeing very good demand. More flesh on the cattle than last week, the majority of the calves this week were long time weaned and had seen some feed. Quality varied, but overall quality more attractive than last week. More loads on offer, including loads of replacement quality heifers, many of these were Red Angus. A moderate to active market seen for this offering. Winter weather in the southern part of the state and in to neighboring states today which could limit shipping options. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, January 26.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
