Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No sale last week due to the winter weather, compared to two weeks ago: steer calves 400 to 500 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher with instances up to 15.00 higher on 400 to 450 lbs, 501 to 600 lbs 4.00 to 9.00 lower, 601 to 650 lbs steady. Heifers 400 to 600 lbs mostly stead, instances up to 10.00 lower on 550 to 600 lbs. Good to very good demand for this large calf offering featuring many loads and packages. All calves off the cow and most had full preconditioning or at least on round of fall shots. Quality mostly average to attractive today, overall quality more attractive than two weeks ago. Colored cattle continue to be discounted at times. An active market with both order buyers and farmer feeders eager to buy cattle. The weather has turned very cold with bitter wind chills and blowing snow today. No feeder cattle sale next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, December 1.
