Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 500 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher, 501 to 550 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, 551 to 650 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher with instances up to 10.00 higher. Heifers calves 400 to 450 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, 451 to 500 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher, 501 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for the majority of this large calf offering which included many packages and quite a few loads. All calves come off the cow with flesh condition mostly light to moderate. Quality and preconditioning varied quite a bit today. Buyers were sometimes willing to overlook a lack of shots if the quality was attractive, however, this report shows a price spread due to the variation in preconditioning, as well as quality and sometimes a combination of both. An active market with a full house of buyers and sellers and farmer feeders. Next feeder cattle sale is Tuesday, October 25, featuring Red Angus cattle, regular sale Thursday, October 27.
