Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Last feeder cattle sale two weeks ago with different weight classes than today so an accurate price trend can not be established. Good demand for a couple loads and many packages of yearlings on offer today. These cattle were all off grass in light to moderate flesh, many of these were tested open heifers. Quality mostly average to attractive. A couple of loads and several packages of calves were met with moderate demand. One consignment was weaned, 26 days, and the rest were off the cow. All had preconditioning. Calves were attractive in quality and in light to moderate flesh. Moderate to active market activity today with buyers showing the most interest in yearlings and farmer feeders in the calves. The late summer and fall rains received in the area has enabled producers to keep cattle on grass much longer than they had anticipated but has also made very lush green grass not ideal for putting weight on cattle. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, October 7 with many calves expected.
