Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: a much larger offering this week than last week with few comparable weight classes, best test on steers 600 to 650 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 lower, and best test on heifers 550 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for today's large calf offering including many loads and packages with best demand seen for light weight, light fleshed cattle which can fit into grass programs or backgrounding programs with a post summer finish date. Quality similar to last week with many attractive calves to choose from, and flesh mostly light to moderate again this week. Several packages of unweaned calves offered, these were discounted at times. A moderate market today with fewer buyers attending the sale due to the weather. Very high winds across the region today and mixed precipitation to the east are impacting travel. Calves sold today will need to spend the night and perhaps tomorrow at the sale barn as it is too windy to put trucks on the road. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, January 21, featuring many Black and Red Angus replacement quality heifers.
