Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Tuesday: steer calves 400 to 450 lbs and 501 to 600 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher with instances up to 10.00 higher, 451 to 500 lbs and 601 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 400 to 500 lbs mostly steady, 501 to 600 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Moderate to good demand for today's large offering featuring many attractive packages and loads of calves off the cow with best demand seen for loads from reputation outfits. Slightly more flesh on the calves than Tuesday, mostly moderate flesh overall. Very few calves without full preconditioning today. A few consignments with a little tag, lots are really starting to get sloppy with the snow melt. A moderate to active market seen for this offering. Next feeder cattle sale is Thursday, November 5.
