Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 400 to 600 lbs 4.00 to 9.00 higher with instances up to 15.00 higher on 400 to 450 lbs, 601 to 650 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Heifer calves 400 to 600 lbs 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Good to very good demand for today's large calf offering featuring many packages and loads of attractive quality calves. Calves were all off the cow today in mostly light to moderate flesh. Preconditioning varied, but most calves had at least one full round of shots. Some discounting occurred if the shot record was unsatisfactory. An active market with many order buyers and several farmer feeders in the seats today. Corn harvest is progressing very quickly and will soon be completed. Next feeder cattle sale is Tuesday, October 20, featuring Red Angus calves.
