Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago: A lower undertone was noted on steers up to 850 lbs. steers 850-900 lbs. sold 3.00 higher, steers 900 lbs. and up sold 8.00-13. 00 lower. A lower undertone was noted on heifers up to 650 lbs. Heifers 700-750 lbs. sold 10.00 lower, 750-850 lbs. sold steady, 850-900 lbs. sold 10.00 lower, 900 lbs. and up sold steady. Demand was good. Many large load lots in today's offering. The next feeder cattle auction will be May 7th, expecting 3000 head of feeders, there will be a fair amount of fall calves at this sale, starting at 9:30 am.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
