Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers under 700 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, instances to 20.00 higher, over 700 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers 10.00 to 15.00 higher, instances to 20.00 higher. Very good demand for this very large offering of spring born calves, along with a big offering of backgrounded yearlings. The market was extremely active as cattle feeders have a very bullish mindset, as cash fed cattle simmers just under the 200.00 mark, nearly 6.00 over the CME Live Cattle futures. The market was very active on the big feedyard bound cattle, and was even more active on the lighter weight cattle as those are much harder to come by. The quality today was very attractive, flesh condition was mostly moderate to moderate plus. Buyers were willing to chase the greener cattle a long ways but were willing to tolerate a little flesh if the quality and kind was right. Next week expecting 5,500 feeders and starting at 9:00 am.
