Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Annual customer appreciation BBQ sale, very large offering of yearling steers and heifers, along with some consignments of weaned fall calves. Compared to the lighter offering two weeks ago: Yearling feeder steers 2.00 to 5.00 higher, instances of 8.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling feeder heifers 10.00 to 12.00 higher. A large offering this week, many long strings of these yearling cattle offered in full loads and multiple load lots. The market was extremely active as there were plenty of buyers on the seats and ready to buy these cattle while they offered, as this is the time of year where sale schedules become sporadic. There was a large selection of all kinds and qualities, along with the whole range of flesh conditions. There were loads of really front end, type cattle that are always easy to sell, yet there was also some strings and loads of more commodity type cattle, the market was active on these kinds as well. Buyers were very watchful of flesh condition, as the breakeven cost for purchased cattle is so high and they need to be able to feed as efficiently as possible to stand a chance at a profit as the fall and winter months of the CME Live Cattle futures remain lower than the current cash market. The offering of fall calves sold very easily and prices really rang a bell, as those light cattle are hard to find. Next feeder cattle auction will be June 27, 2024.
