Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs steady to 5.00 lower, instances to 10.00 lower on 650-700 lbs, over 700 lbs steady to 2.00 higher with instances of 5.00 higher on 800-850 lbs. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Good to very good demand for this special Hereford influenced feeder cattle sale. The market was very active for these cattle that will fit the Certified Hereford Beef program, many of these cattle were in a light flesh condition making them easy to sell. Flesh condition on the black hide and mixed colored cattle was more on the moderate plus side. With the warmer weather, and rain received earlier in the week cattle locked up in feedyard pens were carrying quite a bit of tag and were less eye appealing compared to those that were clean and open haired. Next week, Feb 23, 2023 expecting 7,000 feeder cattle starting at 8:00 am.
