Compared to last week: A higher undertone was noted on steers and heifers up to 500 lbs. steers 500-850 lbs. had a steady to lower undertone, 850-1000 lbs. were unevenly steady, steers 1050-1100 lbs. sold 3.00 lower. Heifers 500-800 lbs. sold on a lower undertone, heifers 850-950 lbs. were 1.00-2.00 higher. Demand was good, with many large load lots in the heavier feeders. The next feeder cattle auction will be Dec. 1st,expecting 5000 head of feeders, starting at 8:30 am. This Friday night Nov, 18th at the Moose in Mitchell SD from 5:00-11:00 pm. there will be a greet and meet the new owners of the Mitchell Sale Barn. What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
