Compared to last week: A lower undertone was noted on steers up to 550 lbs. a higher undertone was noted on steers 550-700 lbs. steers 850-900 lbs. were 3.00 higher steers 900-1100 lbs. were 1.00-5.00 lower. A higher undertone was noted on heifers up 500 lbs. a lower undertone was noted on heifers 500-700 lbs. heifers 800-1000 lbs. were 6.00-11.00 lower, a lower undertone was noted on heifers over 1000 lbs. Demand was good. Many load lots on heavy cattle. No auction next week due to Thanksgiving. The next auction will be on Dec. 3rd, expecting 4000-5000 head of cattle, starting at 9:00 am. "Happy Thanksgiving".

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
