Compared to last sale: Feeder steers and heifers were too lightly tested last week to develop a full market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Demand was good to very good and quality this week was mostly average to attractive. Average quality calves sold on good demand, much like last week. Most cattle were long weaned from 45-100 days. Market activity was active to very active this week. Ranchers and order buyers were both very active as they bid on offerings today. Weigh up cows sold with good demand. Demand for slaughter cows was very good. Packers opted to send all cows to immediate harvest this week as supplies remain tight. Slaughter cows sold sharply higher on breaking and boning cows, lean cows sold 2.00-6.00 higher. Very few feeding cows were seen last week to develop a full market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Slaughter bulls sold sharply higher. Young cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold on good demand again this week. This class sold mostly firm in a narrow comparison. Young cow quality was mostly average to attractive this week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
