Quality this week was mostly average to very attractive. Most cattle were weaned 45-100 days, with a limited offering of calves straight off the cows. Package sizes were mostly moderate again this week with lots of partial loads seen. A few load lots were seen this week and they were met with very good demand. CME positions continue to tick higher. The March closed today at 241.325, 7.675 higher than last Tuesdays close. The April closed at 247.00 today. Market activity was mostly active this week with a large buyer pool noticed of both farmer feeders, ranchers and order-buyers. Demand for replacement quality cattle was good again this week with several buyers looking for heifers to breed. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good to very good demand for light to moderate offerings. Demand for slaughter cows was especially good as packer buyers showed need for cows for immediate harvest. Packers balanced buying cows to feed with meeting slaughter needs. Slaughter cows sold mostly 3.00-5.00 higher on Premium white and breaking cows. Boning and lean cows sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher. Several buyers continue to buy feeding cows as many are betting the market continues to improve. Feeding cows sold on very good demand this sale as private buyers and packer buyers competed over high quality, sound offerings that are suitable to feed. All feeding offerings sold 3.00-8.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 4.00-5.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Weigh up conditions were mixed today. Young age cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand this week. Feeding buyers continue to buy coming 2 year olds to feed as they hope to still feed these cows or heifers to choice. Quality this week was mostly average to attractive. This class of cows sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
