Mid Missouri Stockyards held a special pre-vac sale to kick of the New Year. A much different type of offering than the last regular sale held prior to the holidays in Mid-December, with no true comparisons available, prices at this sale were sharply higher than the last reported market. The supply was heavy with lots of quality and the type of condition that buyers like. Nearly the entire offering was long time weaned with a round or two of shots. Although the day started with some fog and rain rolled in before the sale was complete, locally weather was awfully good for January with afternoon temperatures in the sixties. Despite the fact a few of the normal buyers with orders from northern states were put on hold because of winter type of weather making receiving new cattle difficult to impossible, there was plenty of other buyers on hand to make for a lot of active bidding even with the heavy offering. The biggest hold up seemed to be making sure they could acquire enough trucks, but by the time the sale was complete the magnificent sight of lights reflecting in the rain from a parking lot full of pots would rival the recent memory of any Christmas tree.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
