Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale feeder calves started out sharply lower. However as sale progressed most classes of yearling showed more value. Pee Wee Steers under 400# sold 5.00-20.00 lower; stocker and feeder steers over 400#s sold mixed depending on which classes the buyers wanted. some 15.00 lower and some classes 30.00 higher; stocker heifers under 400# sold 30.00-50.00 lower; bigger heifers over 400# sold 2.00-15.00 higher; Feeder yearling groups were reported as #1-2s ,most groups were weaned this was reported as added value; Slaughter cows sold 4.00-6.00 lower ; slaughter bulls sold 5.00-20.00 lower

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
