Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers traded mostly 5.00 to 8.00 higher, with larger advances on load lots of cattle. Steer and heifer calves traded 10.00 to 20.00 higher. Trading activity was active on very good buyer demand. Slaughter cows traded firm to 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls too lightly tested for a market trend. According to the US Drought Monitor, the northeastern portion of the Texas Panhandle last week saw 2-4 inches rainfall over an area of exceptional drought, helping to relieve drought conditions with a small downgrade to extreme drought there. However, for the most part, extreme to exceptional drought conditions persisted across the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, and much of western Oklahoma. There's not much relief in sight, with this weeks forecast consisting of temperatures in the upper 90's and 100's with limited chances of moisture. ***No sale next week due to the 4th of July Holiday, the next sale will be Tuesday, July 7th.***

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
