Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers traded mostly steady on comparable sales. Steer and heifer calves sold mostly 6.00 to 10.00 lower, with the largest decline on unweaned or short weaned calves without two full rounds of vaccination. Slaughter cows and bulls traded mostly 5.00 to 6.00 lower. Quality was mostly plain to attractive. Trading activity was light to moderate on moderate demand. The majority of the supply consisted of load lots of yearlings straight off the grass and a few smaller bunches of calves. As we move into October larger discounts were noted for calves that weren't weaned or lacked a full vaccination program. The past few weeks we've seen a correction in the calf market. According to the Cattle Market Report and Analysis, early August rains in the southern plains promised bountiful winter grazing and caused a surge in calf prices. Currently the combination of high feed cost and returning drought in the southern plains is causing a reset in replacement prices.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
