Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 450-500 lbs sold 10.00-25.00 higher, with 5 weight steers trading steady to firm, 600-700 lbs steers sold steady to 10.00 higher and over 700 lbs sold with a higher undertone on limited comparisons with last special including six pot loads weighing 872-993 lbs. Heifer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a higher undertone on a light test, with 500-550 lbs trading 10.00-15.00 higher, 550-650 lbs selling steady to firm and seven pot loads of 700-750 heifers all trading with a higher undertone on limited sales from last special. Demand was good on a moderate supply with a very active market on a nice offering of good quality calves and yearlings. Several stick out sales included two pot loads of steers weighing 872-881 at 376.25-377.75; pot load of 708 lb heifers at 383.35 and 5 pot loads (387 hd) averaging 717 lbs at 381.75. Slaughter cows on a very light offering sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
