Compared to the last sale two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 450-650 lbs sold mostly steady on comparable weights and quality, with 650-750 lbs trading with a firm undertone. Heifer calves weighing 400-550 lbs on a light test and selling mostly in small packages traded mostly 10.00-15.00 lower with two pot loads of 720-737 lb heifers selling mostly 2.00-7.00 lower than the pot loads from two weeks ago. Demand was good on a moderate offering. Couple stick out sales included a pot load of 705 lb steers at 427.50 and pot load of heifers weighing 722 lbs at 374.50. Slaughter cows sold with a higher undertone compared to a very light test from two weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
