Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves under 700 lbs sold steady with the exception of 600-650 lb steers selling mostly 5.00-10.00 higher and yearling steers over 700 lbs were not well tested but sold with a firm undertone. Heifer calves weighing 400-500 lbs on a light test sold with a firm to higher undertone with 500-700 lbs trading steady on comparable weights and two pot loads of 716 lb heifers off the same consignment as two weeks ago and weighing near the same sold with a firm undertone. Demand was good on a moderate supply with more new crop fall born calves in the offering this week showing a little more flesh in the offering this week. Several stick out sales included 80 hd of steers weighing 641 lbs at 444.75, 58 steers weighing 937 lbs at 335.25 and 156 hd of heifers weighing 716 lbs sold for 375.25. Slaughter cows traded with a higher undertone on last week's very light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
