Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs were lightly tested with last week on very limited comparisons, 600-700 lbs sold unevenly steady on comparable weights as overall quality was not as attractive as last week's offering, with 7 weight steers not well tested on limited offering. Heifer calves under 550 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone, 550-700 lbs sold steady to firm with two pot loads of 702-728 lbs trading with a higher undertone as weights didn't match up well with last week's pot loads as weights were lighter. Demand was good on a moderate supply with the highlight of the sale being 4 pot loads of 687-728 lb heifers. Stick out sales included the pot loads of heifers with 83 hd weighing 693 lbs at 377.50, 83 hd 687 lbs at 391.00, 80 hd 728 lbs at 378.00 and 81 hd weighing 702 lbs at 381.50. Slaughter cows on a very light offering of mostly average to low dressing cows sold steady with last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
