Compared to last week, a much larger offering this week of steer and heifers calves sold with a higher undertone as last week's sale was centered on the pot loads of yearling heifers, also selling this week were two pot loads of yearling steers weighing 868 and 919 lbs also trading with a higher undertone. Nice offering of top quality weaned steer calves weighing 400-650 lbs and heifers weighing 450-550 lbs all sold on and active market along with the pot loads of yearling steers. Several lots and groups of unweaned calves sold with moderate to good demand but overall quality was good. Stick out sales included 20 head of 615 lb steers at 300.00, pot load of 868 lb steers at 256.25, pot load steers weighing 919 lbs at 253.00. Slaughter cows sold steady with last week's light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
