Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-500 lbs and 550-600 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on limited sales from last week, 600-650 lbs steers sold steady to 6.00 higher and 650-700 lbs traded steady. Feeder heifers weighing 450-550 lbs sold steady with 550-600 lbs selling 5.00-7.00 higher and four pot loads of 685 to 705 lb heifers did not reach last week's highs that was a very active market on the fancy/thin pot loads last week with a couple of pot loads this week of similar quality trading mostly 5.00 lower. Demand was good on a moderate supply with several stick out sales included 37 head of 579 lb steers at 305.00, part load (47 hd) of 683 lb thin steers selling 293.00; two pot loads of 685-686 lb heifers selling at 262.00-264.75 and two pot loads 704-706 lb heifers at 255.00-256.35. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm on a light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
