Compared to the last special two weeks ago, feeder steers on a light test sold steady. Feeder heifers under 550 lbs were lightly tested, with 550-600 lbs trading steady and a pot load of thin heifers weighing 632 lbs sold 1.00 higher than pot load from two weeks ago of similar weight and thin condition with a pot load weighing 707 lbs also thin trading 3.00 higher than pot load from two weeks ago of similar weight and condition, other offerings of heifers over 600 lbs sold steady. Demand was good on a moderate offering. Stick out sales included the pot load of thin/green heifers weighing 632 lbs at 271.00 and pot load weighing 707 lbs also thin/green at 255.10. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00 lower than two weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
