Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs on a light test traded with a firm to higher undertone, with three pot loads of yearling steers over 700 lbs not tested with last week's offering. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs were not tested with 650-700 lbs selling steady, two pot loads of thin fleshed heifers weighing similar to last week 706-712 lbs sold firm to slightly higher. Demand was good on a moderate offering with ten pot loads in the offering three pot loads of steers and seven pot loads of heifers with several stick out sales including two pot loads of thin fleshed heifers weighing 706-712 lbs trading at 252.50-252.85 and a fancy load of heifers weighing 726 lbs with good weighing conditions selling at 259.25. Pot load of 818 lb steers traded at 249.75 and pot load weighing 860 lbs at 246.75. Slaughter cows on a light test of mostly averaging dressing cows sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
