Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs were lightly tested, with 500-650 lbs steers selling 8.00-10.00 higher, 650-700 lbs sold steady to firm, over 700 lbs included two pot loads weighing 715 and 917 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher, 500-600 lbs traded steady to firm with three pot loads and a part load of 625 to 685 lb heifers selling 6.00-9.00 lower compared to the very active market from the last special with two pot loads of 707 and 711 lb heifers trading 2.00-6.00 lower compared to the pot loads of similar weights. Demand was good on a moderate offering with the best demand on the 500-650 lb steers and two pot loads of yearling steers weighing 715 and 917 lbs. Overall quality was very good on the calves and yearlings with several stick out sales including pot load steers weighing 715 lbs at 290.10, pot load steers 917 lbs at 248.25, pot load heifers 707 lbs 260.25 and pot load heifers weighing 653 lbs at 271.75. Slaughter cows on a light offering had some top quality high dressing cows that sold with a sharply higher undertone with two high yielding bulls selling at 194.00 and 199.00.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
