Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-450 lbs sold with a higher undertone, with 500-600 lb steers and 650-700 lb steers selling 5.00-10.00 higher and 600-650 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher over 700 lbs on a light offering traded with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-700 lbs had the most advance trading 10.00-20.00 higher than two weeks ago with the two pot loads of 708 and 715 lb heifers selling 7.00 higher than comparable pot load of similar weight and quality from last special. Slaughter cows sold 5.00-8.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate supply with a overall very nice quality offering of calves and yearling heifers. Several stick out sales of yearling heifers included pot load weighing 682 lbs at 280.00, pot load 673 lbs 278.50 and two pot loads weighing 708 and 715 at 262.60. CME Feeder Cattle futures had a good day with May thru November all having sharp gains from 3.90 to 4.40.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
