Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-700 lb sold steady to firm, spots 5.00 higher on the 550-600 lb steers, with 700-750 lb steers selling with a firm to higher undertone, over 800 lbs were not tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs traded steady with 550-650 lbs lightly tested, 650-700 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower than the pot loads from two weeks ago, over 700 lbs were not well tested. Demand was good on a moderate supply. Despite CME cattle futures having a major sell-off with Live Cattle contracts from April thru December all closing 3.10 to 3.55 lower and Feeder Cattle contracts had April thru August down hard from 5.00-5.37 the market held up very well. Several stick-out sales included 34 hd of steers weighing 698 lbs at 288.50, 33 hd of steers weighing 736 lbs at 282.00, 41 hd of fancy blk heifers weighing 600 lbs at 288.00 and pot load of 668 lb heifers at 256.25. Slaughter cows on a light test sold firm to 5.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
