Compared to last week, steer calves under 550 lbs were lightly tested but sold with a lower undertone, 550-650 lb steers sold mostly 10.00-12.00 lower, with yearling steers over 650 lbs not well tested with last week but selling with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers had the best test on 500-550 lbs selling mostly 7.00-13.00 lower, with 600-650 lbs were lightly tested and sold with a lower undertone, a pot load of 721 lb heifers sold 2.00-8.00 higher than a part load and pot load from last week's offering with similar weights. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply. The offering included several stick-out sales with two pot loads of 712-733 lb steers at 252.00-255.25; pot load of 902 lb steers at 237.85, group of 565 lb steers at 283.00 all sold with good demand on and active market. The offering included several consignments of top quality steers and heifers mostly black with the best demand on the yearling steers. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady to 3.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
