Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, Tuesday's receipts were much larger with the best test on unweaned 450-600 lb steers selling steady to firm with the last sale, weaned calves were not well tested, 600-650 lb steers sold steady to 5.00 lower, with several pot loads of yearling steers over 700 lbs selling with good demand with no recent test. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold 3.00-8.00 lower with the most decline on the 500-550 lb heifers with 4 pot loads of 650-700 lb heifers selling with a firm undertone. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply, best demand was on the pot load lots of yearling steers and heifers and a few long timed weaned steer calves weighing 500-550 lbs. Market held up well despite Monday's huge losses with several stick-out sales including 51 steers weighing 722 lbs at 266.85, pot load 784 lb steers at 250.25 and pot load of fancy heifers weighing 655 lbs at 266.00. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm with two week's ago light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
