Compared to the last special three weeks ago, feeder steers under 700 lbs traded with a lower undertone on a light test, with a couple pot loads of 820 lb and 903 lb steers and a part load 725 lb steers selling with a steady to firm undertone. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs were lightly tested with a pot load of thin black heifers weighing 613 lbs selling with a higher undertone and two pot loads of 660-673 lb selling mostly 3.00-5.00 lower than similar pot loads from three weeks ago and three pot loads of 745 and 775 lb heifers were not tested. Demand was moderate to good best on the yearling steers and heifers as calves all for the most part sold with a lower undertone. There were several stick-out sales of yearlings with a pot load of 613 lb heifers with good weighing conditions selling at 282.75, pot load heifers weighing 663 lbs at 267.00 and a pot load of top quality 903 lb steers at 245.75. CME Cattle futures hit a wall on Tuesday as Live Cattle futures traded with triple digit losses with Dec, Feb and April contracts all trading 270-285 lower and Feeder cattle contracts all sharply lower with Oct, Nov and January contracts selling off from 495 to 582 lower. Stock Market also had a bad day dropping 388 points with concern over a government shut down has markets in a defensive position. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm with three weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
