Compared to the last special two weeks ago, bulk of the feeder steers weighed over 600 lbs and sold with a higher undertone with few limited comparisons, a light offering of steer calves sold with a firm to higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone, with 500-700 lb heifers trading mostly 5.00-10.00 higher and over 700 lbs with a higher undertone. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady. Demand was good on a moderate offering with two pot loads of top quality 832 and 852 lb steers, pot ,load of 722 lb steers all sold with very good demand and a pot load of 646 lb heifers and 704 lb heifers also selling with good demand.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
