Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs and 600-650 lbs with 400-600 lb heifer calves sold 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 12.00-15.00 higher on the 600-650 lb steers. steers weighing 500-600 lbs sold fully steady to firm. Heifers over 600 lbs sold with a higher undertone as did a pot load of 775 lb steers. Demand was good on a good quality offering of calves and yearlings on a moderate supply. There was three pot loads of yearling heifers weighing 675-810 lbs all selling on a very active market along with the steer and heifer calves. Slaughter cows on a nice offering sold on a very active market trading 10,00-15.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
