Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a higher undertone on last week's light test, 500-600 lbs sold mostly steady, with 600-700 lbs selling 4.00-6.00 higher and 7 weight steers trading with a higher undertone and a a pot load of 885 lb steers not well tested over the last month. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs sold steady with 600-750 lbs trading steady to 5.00 higher. Nice offering of 600-750 lb heifers included three pot loads and several large groups with three pot loads of 685 to 885 lb steers all selling on and active market. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
