Compared to the last special two weeks ago, 400-500 lb steer calves sold with a sharply higher undertone on a light test from two weeks ago, 500-700 lbs sold with firm to higher undertone on few comparable sales with 700-800 lbs not well tested but trading with a weak to lower undertone. Feeder heifers had the best test on the 600-700 lbs selling steady to firm with under 600 lbs selling with a firm to higher undertone. Overall quality was very good on steer and heifer calves weighing 400-600 lbs and yearling heifers weighing 600-700 lbs, also in the offering were several lots of top quality replacement heifers all selling on a very active market as calves were all long timed weaned with full round of shots. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher on a light test.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
