Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a higher undertone on a light test, with 500-700 lbs steers selling steady to firm, spots 3.00 higher on the 600-650 lb steers, over 700 lbs were lightly tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to firm, with a pot load of 630 lb heifers with good weighing conditions selling with a sharply higher undertone and a near pot load weighing 660 lbs trading 3.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply. July corn closed 14 1/2 cents lower with December corn closing 13 3/4 cents lower helped Feeder Cattle contracts have triple digit gains from 2.50-2.77 from August through October contracts.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
