Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, feeder steers weighing 400-650 lbs sold fully steady to firm, with yearling steers over 650 lbs trading with a firm to higher undertone on few comparisons. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone, with 450-550 lbs trading 5.00-10.00 higher and over 550 lbs selling steady to firm. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower. Demand was good on a moderate supply with a good quality offering of steer and heifer calves also a top quality offering of two pot loads of 825-878 lb steers and five pot loads of 635-720 lb heifers all selling with good demand.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
