Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, a light test of 4 weight steers sold with a firm to higher undertone, 500-600 lb steers sold steady to firm, with 600-700 lbs trading firm to 5.00 higher and 700-800 lbs firm undertone. feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs sold steady to firm, with 550-600 lbs selling firm to 3.00 higher and 600-650 lbs trading with a higher undertone on limited sales from two weeks ago. Slaughter cows sold steady on a light test. Demand was good on a moderate offering of good quality steers and heifers all selling on and active market. CME Feeder Cattle Futures had sharp triple digit losses as March corn closed up 20 1/4 cents breaking the 6.00 per/bu barrier with March soybeans 34 1/4 cents higher as dry weather concerns in South America are drawing attention to the market. This however had little effect on the feeder cattle market on Tuesday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
