Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, feeder steers weighing 500-600 lbs and 650-700 lbs sold 4.00-6.00 higher, with 700-800 lbs steady to firm and a pot load of 800 lb steers selling 3.00 higher than the previous auction on comparable weights. Feeder heifers weighing under 600 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone compared to the last auction's limited offering, 600-650 lbs sold mostly 5.00 higher and 650-750 lbs traded steady to firm. Slaughter cows sold steady. Best demand was on steer calves and yearling steers weighing from 500-800 lbs all sold on active market, with four pot loads of 650-715 lb heifers also selling with good demand.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
