Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves under 550 lbs were lightly tested and sold with a lower undertone, 550-600 lbs sold 6.00-8.00 lower, a light test of 6 weight steers sold mostly 8.00-10.00 lower and over 700 lbs were not well tested. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs on light test sold steady to 3.00 lower, 500-700 lb heifers sold 5.00-7.00 lower than two weeks ago. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady to 2.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate offering, with a nice offering of good quality 600-700 lb heifers selling with good demand. Market continues to come under pressure from high escalating corn prices and cattle futures struggling to find a comfortable position.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
